Pickleball Etiquette: The Do’s and Don’ts on the Court

Pickleball is more than just a fast-growing sport—it’s a community built on fun, respect, and good sportsmanship. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting, following proper pickleball etiquette ensures that everyone enjoys their time on the court. At Dark Horse Dinkers, we value fair play and a welcoming atmosphere, so let’s dive into some essential do’s and don’ts to keep the game friendly and competitive!
The Do’s of Pickleball Etiquette
1. Respect Your Opponents and Partners
Win or lose, always be respectful to those you’re playing with. A friendly “good game” or a paddle tap goes a long way in building camaraderie.
2. Call the Score Loudly and Clearly
Before each serve, call out the score so that everyone on the court is aware. This avoids confusion and keeps the game moving smoothly.
3. Communicate with Your Partner
In doubles play, teamwork is key! Call out shots, encourage each other, and establish strategies to work together effectively.
4. Wait for Your Turn
If all courts are full, be patient and wait for your turn to play. When games are played in a rotation, step off promptly after a match to allow others a chance to play.
5. Give Beginners a Warm Welcome
Remember, everyone was a beginner once! Offer helpful tips and encouragement to new players instead of criticizing mistakes.
6. Keep the Game Moving
Take efficient water breaks, retrieve stray balls quickly, and be ready for the next rally to keep the pace enjoyable for everyone.
7. Respect Court Boundaries
Avoid walking onto active courts while games are in play. If your ball rolls onto another court, wait for a natural pause before retrieving it.
The Don’ts of Pickleball Etiquette
1. Don’t Smash at Beginners
While power shots are a great part of pickleball, aggressively smashing at beginners or weaker players can be discouraging and unsportsmanlike. Play at a level that keeps the game fun for all.
2. Don’t Argue Over Line Calls
Pickleball is a game of honor. If a shot is close, give your opponent the benefit of the doubt. If disagreements arise, replay the point instead of arguing.
3. Don’t Interrupt a Rally
If your ball rolls onto another court, wait until their rally is over before asking for it back. Likewise, avoid stopping mid-game for non-urgent conversations.
4. Don’t Overcoach Unsolicited
Offering tips is great, but avoid constant unsolicited advice—especially during a game. Let players ask for coaching when they want it.
5. Don’t Hog the Court
If courts are limited and there’s a waiting list, be mindful of playtime. Rotate out after a game to let others have a turn.
6. Don’t Take the Game Too Seriously
Pickleball is meant to be fun! Keep a positive attitude, avoid excessive celebrations, and don’t get frustrated over mistakes.
